Teachers - Special Education

 

We are seeking teachers who have an interest in working alongside students with unique learning needs. 

Our preferred applicants are experienced in teaching students with special educational needs or are teachers with a passion to work in special education who wish to join a vibrant and dedicated team.

Our learners range in age from 5–21 years of age and are situated at either our base school site in Glenfield, one of our many satellite classes on the wider North Shore.

Successful applicants must be NZ registered teachers with current practising certificates along with current and valid working visas.

Occupational Therapist

Full-time, permanent position

  • Location: Working across our Base School and satellite classes across Auckland's North Shore and Hibiscus Coast.

Wairau Valley Special School provides specialist education for ORS-funded ākonga aged 5–21 years with high and complex learning support needs.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our collaborative multidisciplinary therapy team. You will work alongside classroom teams, whānau and external agencies to support learners' participation, independence, regulation and access to the curriculum.

Key Requirements

  • Professional Registration: Current registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand (OTBNZ) and a current Annual Practising Certificate.

  • Specialist Education Experience: Knowledge of occupational therapy within an education setting, with experience supporting neurodiverse learners with intellectual disability, sensory processing differences and/or complex physical needs. Experience with assistive technology, seating, mobility and equipment is desirable.

  • Collaborative Practice: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with ākonga, whānau, classroom teams and multidisciplinary colleagues.

  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi: An understanding of culturally responsive practice and a commitment to equitable outcomes for ākonga and whānau.

    Positive Behaviour Support: Knowledge of trauma-informed and neuroaffirming practice, with a strengths-based approach to supporting learner participation and wellbeing.

  • Organisation & Flexibility: Strong communication and time management skills, with the ability to work across multiple school sites. A full New Zealand driver's licence is essential.

About Our Therapy Team

Our Therapy Team is based together at our Base School. You will be joining a supportive team of: 

  • 5 Occupational Therapists 

  • 4 Physiotherapists

  • 7 Speech-Language Therapists 

We operate under the NZEI Therapists' Collective Agreement regarding salary and conditions. We pride ourselves on having a friendly, inclusive and supportive working environment where we aim to make a meaningful difference to every single learner.
